Compact South Bay city between Hawthorne and Gardena — residential streets, easy access, same rates throughout.
Lawndale is a small, dense residential city tucked between Hawthorne, Gardena, and Redondo Beach. Its housing stock is predominantly apartments and small single-family homes built in the 1950s–70s, with a mix of older walk-up apartment complexes and newer mid-size buildings along Prairie Avenue and 166th Street.
The city's compact size — 2 square miles — means very little of Lawndale is far from a major arterial. Inglewood Avenue and Prairie Avenue are the main truck corridors; residential streets are narrow in places but navigable with the right vehicle sizing.
Lawndale draws residents who want South Bay proximity (Redondo and Manhattan Beaches are minutes away) without beach-city rents. Moves here are often lateral South Bay relocations from higher-priced Manhattan Beach or Redondo, or arrivals from further inland looking for coastal access at lower cost.
A 1-bedroom in Lawndale runs $299–$399. A 2-bedroom is $440–$600. Stair charges apply for older walk-up apartments.
Redondo Beach is about 2 miles from central Lawndale — a standard South Bay combination for us.
