Los Angeles has year-round moving season, but timing your move strategically can save you hundreds of dollars and significant hassle. Here's what the data and our experience tell us about the best times to move in LA.
October-November is the golden window. Weather is mild, schools have started, and demand drops sharply after summer. Movers are more available and pricing is more competitive. January-February is the absolute slowest season -- you'll get the best rates and most scheduling flexibility.
June-August is peak season. College students moving out, leases ending June 30, families trying to move before school starts. Expect 20-40% higher prices and limited weekend availability. December 26-31 is surprisingly busy as people try to be settled for New Year's.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are the cheapest and most available days. Saturday is the most expensive -- often 15-25% higher than a weekday move. Friday and Sunday are moderate.
Start at 7am or 8am. LA traffic builds quickly after 9am and the 405 or 10 can add 30-60 minutes to your move by midday. Morning moves also avoid afternoon heat in summer.
An October weekday move vs. a July Saturday move for the same 2BR LA apartment can differ by $200-$500. At Best Movers LA we offer flat rates year-round, but availability and flexibility are much better in the off-season.
