How a Best Movers LA local move works
- 60-second quote. Tell us ZIP-to-ZIP, home size and date. We send a written flat hourly rate.
- Pre-move planning. We arrange building COIs, reserve elevators and check parking — including permit zones in Santa Monica and West Hollywood.
- Move day. The crew calls 30 minutes ahead, protects floors, wraps every furniture piece, loads in one trip.
- Delivery and setup. Furniture placed by room, beds reassembled, debris removed. You pay exactly the quoted rate × hours.
Neighborhood know-how that saves hours
LA moves fail on logistics, not muscle. Best Movers LA's dispatchers plan around 405/101 rush windows, schedule Hollywood Hills moves with smaller shuttle trucks for narrow switchbacks, and pull City of LA temporary no-parking permits when a building has no loading zone. That planning is why our average move finishes 1–2 hours faster than the citywide average.
What the clock actually covers
Hourly moving goes wrong in one place: nobody agrees when the meter starts. Here is ours, in plain terms.
The clock starts when the crew reaches your door and stops when the last item is placed and the paperwork is signed. You are not billed for the drive from our yard to you, or from your new place back — California does not allow a household mover to charge that, and we do not. Between your two addresses the state requires double drive time, so a 20-minute leg bills as 40. That is the one multiplier on the bill, and it is on the quote before move day.
Three hours is the minimum on a standard local move. Below about fifteen items, the two-hour small-move minimum applies instead.
Three real local moves, priced out
Same rates, real distances taken from our own route pages, arithmetic shown. Every line is either crew time or the state’s drive-time rule — there are no surcharges to find later.
| Move | On the clock | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Studio Echo Park → Silver Lake 2 miles |
2 hr load and unload · 0.33 hr drive (10 min × 2) = 2.33 hr, billed at the 3-hour minimum |
$264 |
| 1 bedroom Venice → Pasadena 28 miles |
2.75 hr load and unload · 1.83 hr drive (55 min × 2) = 4.5 hr |
$396 |
| 2 bedrooms Burbank → Culver City 16 miles |
4 hr load and unload · 1 hr drive (30 min × 2) = 5 hr |
$440 |
All three at $88/hr for two movers and a truck. The drive column is where a cross-town move quietly gets expensive: two miles across Echo Park to Silver Lake adds twenty billed minutes and the job lands on the minimum anyway; twenty-eight miles from Venice to Pasadena adds an hour and fifty. Same furniture in the one-bedroom case — the difference is entirely road.
Peak traffic is the other lever, and it compounds. The 405 and the 101 between 7–10 AM and 3–7 PM can double a cross-town leg, and because that leg already bills double, an hour lost in traffic costs two. That is why we push for early starts, and why every route page on this site shows both the off-peak and the rush-hour figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum charge for a local move?
Three hours at your quoted hourly rate, plus California-required double drive time. A typical studio move totals $264–$330 all-in. The Best Movers LA estimate is confirmed by email before the crew is scheduled.
Can Best Movers LA move me today or tomorrow?
Usually yes. We keep 2–3 same-day/next-day slots per day. Call (213) 679-6844 before 1 PM for same-day availability.
Does Best Movers LA disassemble and reassemble furniture?
Yes — beds, desks, tables, bunk beds, and standard IKEA pieces are included in the hourly rate. We at Best Movers LA bring the tools.
Is there an extra charge for apartments with stairs?
No. Stairs, long carries up to 75 ft, and elevator moves are all included in the hourly rate.
How does Best Movers LA protect my furniture and floors?
Every piece is blanket-wrapped and shrink-wrapped; doorways get padding and floors get runners. Damage claims occur on fewer than 1 in 200 moves, and we at Best Movers LA carry full cargo insurance.
When does the clock start and stop on a local move?
It starts when the crew arrives at your door and stops when the last item is placed. You are not billed for travel from our yard to you, or from your new address back. Between your two addresses California requires double drive time, which is on your written quote before move day.
How much does a one bedroom move across LA cost?
A one-bedroom from Venice to Pasadena — 28 miles — works out to about 4.5 hours on the clock: 2.75 hours loading and unloading plus 1.83 hours of drive time (55 minutes billed double). At $88/hr for two movers and a truck that is $396. Best Movers LA quotes this flat and in writing before moving day.
Why does a cross-town move cost so much more than a nearby one?
Because drive time between your two addresses bills at double. Two miles across Echo Park to Silver Lake adds about 20 billed minutes; 28 miles from Venice to Pasadena adds 110. Same furniture, an hour and a half of difference.
