Home gyms are deceptively hard to move: a power rack, loaded barbell set, treadmill and bench add up to a half-ton of awkward, heavy, easily-damaged equipment — and dropped weight plates wreck floors. Done right, it's mostly about disassembly, smart lifting and floor protection.
Disassemble what you can
Break down the power rack and cable machines (bag and label the hardware), remove the bench attachments, and unplug and immobilize the treadmill — most fold and lock for transport, and forcing one that isn't secured can damage the deck and motor. Weight plates and dumbbells should be moved in small, manageable loads in sturdy boxes or crates, never piled, because a box of plates that's too heavy to lift safely is how floors and backs get hurt.

Protect floors and electronics
Gym gear is heavy enough to gouge hardwood and crack tile, so we lay floor protection along the carry path on both ends. Treadmills, Pelotons and screen-equipped machines are electronics first and furniture second — we wrap and pad them and keep them upright. If yours is in a garage or a second-floor room, tell us about stairs and access so we bring the right crew size.
Cost and planning
Home-gym moves are billed at our standard hourly rate, with the time driven by how much disassembly is needed and the stairs involved — our rate includes the labor, tools, padding and floor protection. A full garage gym typically adds an hour or two to a regular move. See our local moving rates or get a free quote, and mention the heaviest items so we plan the crew accordingly.
Equipment by category
Weight racks and squat cages: Always disassemble. Photograph every bolt and bracket before you start — the assembly manual from 4 years ago is usually gone. We bring the tools; bring us the photos. Individual pieces go in furniture blankets, bolts in labeled bags.
Treadmills and ellipticals: Most fold or partially disassemble. The base unit requires a heavy-duty appliance dolly and a 2-person minimum. Transport flat (deck-side down) — never upright. Confirm the destination door clearance before move day.
Cable machines and functional trainers: The most complex home gym pieces to move. The weight stack alone is 150–300 lbs; the frame requires full disassembly in most cases. These are quoted separately because they take significantly longer than simple furniture.
Rubber flooring: Interlocking floor tiles can be rolled up and transported easily. Glued rubber sheet flooring is typically left behind — it rarely survives removal.
Dumbbells and plates: Deadweight. A full set of dumbbells to 100 lbs weighs more than a refrigerator. We use heavy-duty floor-level dollies, not standard moving carts. Weight is packed in small boxes — 30 lbs max per box, no exceptions.
Floor protection
Weight plates and iron equipment on hardwood or tile floors require ground-up protection: rubber pads under the dolly, runners on all travel paths. In the destination, we place rubber mats before setting down any equipment. This is standard on every gym move — no extra charge.

Secure or fold the treadmill
Most treadmills fold up and lock for transport — do that, and engage any transport lock so the deck can't slam. For non-folding models, immobilize the deck. Unplug it and coil the cord. A treadmill is electronics first, so don't drop or jar it; the motor and console don't like impacts.
Ellipticals and bikes
Ellipticals are top-heavy and often best partially disassembled — remove the pedals/arms where possible and bag the hardware. Exercise bikes are simpler but still heavy; immobilize moving parts. Photograph connections before taking anything apart.
Weight plates and dumbbells
Never pile weights in one big box — a box of plates that's too heavy to lift is how floors and backs get hurt. Move plates and dumbbells in small, manageable loads in sturdy crates or boxes you can actually carry. Racks come apart; bag the hardware.
Protect floors and plan the stairs
Gym gear is heavy enough to gouge floors and crack tile, so protect the carry path on both ends, and take stairs slowly with two people and the weight downhill. LA walk-ups and garage gyms are exactly where a crew earns its keep. Our movers handle the heavy equipment as part of the move — see our home gym moving guide and furniture protection guide.

Related questions
Can movers disassemble and reassemble gym equipment?
Most handle basic disassembly — removing pull-up bars, splitting a squat rack. For complex cable machines, confirm with your mover before booking.
How do I pack weight plates for a move?
Small boxes only — 20–25 lbs max per box. Label clearly as HEAVY.
Will movers move a treadmill in Los Angeles?
Yes — treadmills are heavy but standard. Confirm your mover includes appliance straps and ask if any disassembly beyond folding is needed.
How do I move heavy gym equipment like a squat rack?
Squat racks must be disassembled before moving — most bolt together in 3–5 sections. Document the assembly order with photos before disassembly. The individual pieces are typically 80–120 lbs each, requiring a 2-person team. Specialty dollies with straps prevent damage to rubber flooring.
Can Best Movers LA move a treadmill without disassembly?
Most treadmills fold for transport; some require partial disassembly of handlebars and consoles. The base unit is typically 200–350 lbs and needs a heavy appliance dolly. Never tilt a treadmill more than 45 degrees or transport it upright — the motor can shift.
How much does it cost to move home gym equipment in LA?
A home gym move alongside a 2-bedroom home adds approximately $80–$200 to the job, depending on number of pieces and disassembly required. A standalone gym move (equipment only) runs $250–$450 for a typical setup with 4–6 major pieces.
Do movers handle exercise equipment?
Yes — our crews move treadmills, ellipticals, racks and weights as part of a standard move, protecting floors and taking the stairs safely. Mention the heaviest items when you book.
